Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

This week we are celebrating 200 years of Catholic Education in Australia. Catholic Education recognises and celebrates the contribution families across Australia have made to the foundation of our schools. Catholic schools have grown and continue to thrive in all areas of our country, due to the valuable contribution of our families. In recognition of our families, Family Week will be celebrated nationally from 8th -14th of August.  The families at Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School add to the richness and vitality of our school community. When we look back at the history of the school, we see that families were instrumental in getting the buildings and grounds established 30 years ago.  Families continue to be invested in ensuring the school continues to thrive into the future.  Thank you to all the Mums, Dads, Grandparents and children of Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School for your family’s contribution to our community.

Feast of the Assumption of Mary

The Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, is on August 15th.  The Feast Day honours Mary’s journey into Heaven. To be “assumed” into Heaven, means that God took Mary into Heaven, body and soul, without the suffering of death. Mary’s relationship with God was so special and holy that God chose her to be the Mother of Jesus and join him at the end of her life of earth, body and soul, in Heaven.

God chose Mary to be the mother of his son, Jesus.

Mary was always ready and willing to do whatever God wanted.

Because she was so special she was taken up body and soul to be with Jesus in heaven – this is what ‘Assumption’ means.

What qualities of Mary would we like to grow in our lives?

Parents and friends are welcome to join the school and parish for Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption on Friday 13th August commencing at 9.30am at St Francis of Assisi Church, Maida Vale.

Oklahoma – the Musical. Friday 20th August 9.30am

The Year 5 and 6 students have been working hard with Mrs Aldred to prepare for their Musical presentation of Oklahoma.  This promises to be a show not to be missed.  The singing, dancing, acting, costumes and staging are of an excellent standard.  The students will be performing the show for an audience on Friday 20th August in the Undercover Area commencing at 9.30am.  The adjudicators for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival will be in attendance to adjudicate the performance.  Please come along and join us in celebrating the talents of our students.  The performance will be highly entertaining and should not be missed. Parents, friends and younger siblings are all invited to come along.  Seating will be on a first in basis.

Sacrament of Confirmation

Please continue to keep our Year 6 students, their parents, teachers and sponsors, in your prayers as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation on Friday 20th August.  The students enjoyed a visit this week from Monsignor Tim Corcoran and Fr Joseph Rathnaraj, who will be celebrating the Sacrament. It was my great pleasure this week to read some of the Saint Projects the students have completed in preparation for receiving Confirmation. The research and reflections are of a high standard and demonstrate the dedication the students have towards receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

P&F Meeting 18th August 7.30pm

Please look out for the agenda for the next P&F Meeting, on 18th August, that will be available on Seesaw on Thursday.  We have a new Q&A segment on the P&F agenda, whereby parents can ask questions, related to school, to the leadership team.  We will do our best to answer.  Often parents have queries about school, that other parents may also be thinking, and the Q&A segment should provide a forum for some discussion.  The President of Catholic School Parents WA, Siobhan Allan, will be at the meeting to talk to us about the association and how we can continue to grow.  Please come along, bring a friend and enjoy this opportunity to have your voice heard.

Bunning Sausage Sizzle – 28th August

The P&F Bunnings Sausage Sizzle is a significant fund raiser for the school.  Money raised will go towards the 30th anniversary nature playgrounds. The sausage sizzle will be at Midland Bunnings on Saturday 28th  August.  A flier advertising the sausage sizzle and asking for parent volunteers, will be available on Seesaw this week.  Please put your name down for a rostered session, if you can.  Parents are reminded to not share the event code on social media.

I look forward to welcoming parents and visitors to Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Assumption on Friday at 9.30am at St Francis of Assisi Church.

Warm regards

Therese Hussey

Making Jesus Real  Week 4 Term 3

We continue to focus on the value of COMPASSION this week. Marilynn Price-Mitchell, compares building compassion to building muscles. “Children who participate in programs that teach kindness, respect, empathy, and compassion and who have families that reinforce those strengths at home develop the muscles they need to become civically engaged adolescents and adults,” she says. Putting compassion into practice early on can set a precedent that lasts. “During the teen years, they reach deep within themselves, access these muscles, and develop social and civic identities that last a lifetime.” https://www.connectionsacademy.com/support/resources/article/how-to-teach-children-compassion

MILO MONDAYS GOING ONLINE

Exciting news – starting next week, we are trialing an online ordering system for our Milo Mondays.  Orders need to be made before 8am on Monday.  The system works the same as our canteen online ordering. We hope that this method of payment will assist our families, and in turn, help the St Vincent De Paul Society.

WINTER CLOTHING APPEAL

Families are encouraged to donate any unwanted clean clothes to the Vinnies Winter Appeal. Please bring your donations to the foyer area of the main teaching block and place in the clothing bin. Our bin will be available for 2 weeks (16th – 30th August).

SAVE THE DATE! Parish School Lunch – Gift from the Parishioners of St Francis of Assisi Parish.

The parishioners of St Francis of Assisi Parish have decided to gift the school with a school and parish community lunch on Sunday 17th October to celebrate our 30th anniversary.  The parish are arranging a luncheon for all members of the school and parish community. Families are encouraged to come along and enjoy this most generous gift from the parish.

Angelico Arts Exhibition

The Catholic Arts Angelico Exhibition is an opportunity for our students in Catholic Schools in WA to showcase their visual arts talents.  Only eight pieces of art works per school can be entered into the exhibition and I am pleased that we have entries representing the artistic talent at Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School.   The exhibition will be open from Monday 9 to Friday 27th August at the Forrest Centre, 221 St George’s Tce, Perth.

Book Week Parade

The Book Week Parade will take place on Thursday 26th August at 9.30am. Parents and visitors are invited to come along and enjoy the excitement and spectacle of the children and staff dressing up as book characters. Further information will be provided by class teachers.

Parent Intentions and Enrolments for 2022

Each year we have families discontinue their enrolment at Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School, for a variety of reasons.  In order for us to allocate places to families who are currently on a wait list for the 2022 school year, I request that families who either know they will be moving, or those families who are thinking about a possible move, to please let the school know as soon as possible.  It is important that we can offer some certainty to parents who would like their child to attend our school in 2022.
