Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

This Sunday, 28th November, we commence the Season of Advent and the beginning of the new liturgical year. Advent is a special time in the Church year when we prepare and get ready to celebrate the birth of Jesus.  The word “Advent” means “coming.” When we light the candles on the wreath, it symbolises the coming of Jesus into the world. As we light the first of the Advent, we centre our thoughts on the theme of hope.  It is a time to remember the hope God offers to our world through Jesus.  Advent is such a joyous time for our children and our families.  We see our homes, classrooms and communities beginning to prepare with decorations and symbols.  The children are eagerly learning about the Christmas story and the meaning of the 4 Advent candles. Amongst the frantic pace that we experience in the final weeks of the term, please take some time to reflect on the joy of the Advent Season that we see through the eyes of our children.

Hopeful God,

Thank you for always being patient with us.

You help us to have hope for the future.

Please help us to patiently wait in this season of Advent.

We pray for our brothers and sisters around the world, who are hopeful for an opportunity to learn and build a better life.

In your name we pray,

Amen

Parents & Friends Association 2022

Thank you to our parents who have supported the school during 2021, as member of the Parents and Friends Association.  As explained at the Annual Community Meeting last night, we have enjoyed a successful year of friend and fund-raising activities.

We have a number of people retiring from the School Advisory Council this year.  I am most grateful to all those who have served on the Council, offering their time and expertise to assist with the smooth running of the school. First of all, I thank Gavin Hogg, retiring as School Advisory Council Chairperson after 7 years of dedicated service to the School Board and School Advisory Council.  Gavin has led the Council through a period of transition with attention to detail, a commitment to accountability and much good humour.  We farewell and thank Suraj Karki and Paul Kaciuba, as they complete their time as Advisory Council members.  Suraj has been most generous in sharing his expertise as Treasurer on the Council.  Paul has provided valuable support as a member of the Maintenance Committee. I am most grateful for the time that Gavin, Paul and Suraj have offered to the school.

Ms Chloe Grant joins us as Social Worker for 2022. Chloe is an experienced Social Worker with a background in working with children and families in a variety of settings. We welcome back Shannon Hewitt from her parental leave to resume her position as Physical Education Teacher.

At the conclusion of this year we farewell Oliver Battistessa. Oliver has been an outstanding Physical Education Teacher and we wish him well as he commences a new position as teacher at St Paul’s School in Karratha. We farewell Krystle Neal, who has stepped in as Pre-Primary Teacher during this term. Krystle has quickly established excellent relationships with the Pre-Primary students and has been a valuable member of staff. We wish Krystle all the best as she commences her new position as teacher at Good Shepherd School in Lockridge.

School Fees and Amenities Levy 2022

School Fees and Amenities were outlined to parents at the Annual Community Meeting last night. The school continues to work closely with Catholic Education WA to ensure fees remain affordable for all our families to access a Catholic Education.  School fees will not increase in 2022.  However, there will be a slight increase of between $30 and $40 for the Amenity Fee for year levels from Pre-Primary to Year Six. There is no increase for Kindy.  The increase in amenities covers the increased cost for items such as; excursions incursions, bus hire, school camp, subscriptions and Edu Dance.  After positive feedback from staff and parents, the book lists will once again be included in the Amenities Levy for 2022.

An outline of 2022 fees and changes will shortly be made available to parents.

Graduation

We look forward to the Year Six Graduation Mass and Awards Ceremony on Thursday 9th December commencing at 9.05am in the undercover area.  All parents and friends are invited to attend.  The ceremony will be followed by morning tea.  Please join us to farewell our Year Six students as we thank them for the valued contribution they have made to our school.

End of Year Concert

Save the date for the end of year Nativity and Edu Dance Concert on Friday 3rd December commencing at 6.00pm.  The concert promises to be a lot of fun as the Kindy children share with us the nativity story and the PP-Year 6 students entertain us with their Edu Dance items. Please bring grandparents, siblings and other special friends along to join in the fun of the concert evening.  The evening is always a highlight of our school calendar.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Making Jesus Real – Week 7 Term 4

Our focus value this fortnight is CHEERFULNESS.

Cheerfulness is an expression of joy and as such is commanded of all followers of Christ:

‘Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: rejoice!’

(Philippians 4:4).

There is something wonderfully contagious about cheerfulness: cheerful people can trigger a chain reaction in which other people are encouraged to be positive and cheerful.  At Assembly on Monday, the children showed this by smiling at one another and everyone couldn’t help, but smile back.

The message of Christianity is “good news” to share with others. Good News is cheerful, joyful and happy.  So, go out, be of good cheer and share the joy that God gives.

ADVENT

This weekend marks the start of the Church’s new year, with Advent.  One of our most treasured traditions is the Advent Wreath, which helps us to reflect and prepare for the feast of Christmas.

Week 1 is the Candle of Hope

Like the prophets in the Old Testament, we hope for a Messiah to save us, and we look forward to the arrival of our Saviour, Jesus.

The first candle, is lit as a sign of our hope

  • For what do you hope for personally?
  • For what do you hope for in the wider world?
  • Other than presents what is your real hope for, this Christmas?
  • In what ways might you and your family be a sign of hope in the week to come?

Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

On Sunday 21st November the Church celebrates the Feast of Christ the King, also called the Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe.  The celebration is on the final week before we commence the celebration of the Advent Season. As we celebrate Christ as King, we recognise the freeing power of Christ who is alive and working among us to lift up the poor and needy, and to bring justice and peace into the world.  We see many examples of the commitment to the poor and needy at school during Term Four.  We see our students and families collect items for the St Vincent De Paul Advent Appeal.  We see our staff collecting items for new and expectant mothers and babies to donate to Catholic Pregnancy Help. We see our children bringing justice and peace into the world as they show kindness and compassion and strive to Make Jesus Real every day. The spirit of Christ the King is indeed evident in our community.

Lord Jesus Christ,

You are a King who cares deeply for his people.

May we search out those in need,

so that Love and Justice will reign

as the Kingdom of God is brought forth within us.

We ask our prayer in your name and in the power of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.

Baptism Congratulations

I am delighted to congratulate Amelia and Lillian, students at Matthew Gibney Catholic School, who along with their younger sister, received the Sacrament of Baptism last weekend.  Our prayers and best wishes to the children, and their parents, as they join the Catholic Church community and grow in their faith over the coming years.

Annual Community Meeting – 24th November 7.00pm

All parents are invited to come along to the Annual Community Meeting on Wednesday 24th November, commencing at 7.00pm in the Library.  The P&F and the School Advisory Council will both present a summary of achievements during the year.  In addition, the annual school budget will be presented and I will provide a short report.  Nominations for membership on both the P&F Executive and the School Advisory Council will be received and voted upon at the meeting, if necessary.  Refreshments will be available during the meeting.  Please rsvp your attendance, for catering purposes, to the link:  RSVP

Making Jesus Real – Week 6 Term 4

We continue to focus on the value of KINDNESS.

Why should we be kind?  Apart from the fact that Jesus showed us how to be kind, it helps us connect in a positive way with friends, family, and even our enemies.  Being kind can boost our own mood and sense of well-being.

Our acts of kindness might inspire others to be kind. Our act touches someone, who reacts in kindness to someone else, and that inspires more acts of kindness. Think of your acts of kindness as planted seeds.  You may not be around for the harvest but acts of kindness can grow into a bountiful crop!

And finally, acts of kindness towards those less fortunate than us can make us grateful.  It can give us an awareness of all the blessings we have in our lives.

Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

I am preparing this newsletter whilst accompanying the Year Six students on their school camp to Busselton, along with Ms Zurzolo and Mr Battistessa.  We have been blessed with fine weather and the students are enjoying the team building and excursion activities the camp has to offer.  Year Six camp brings out the best in our students.  We see them challenging themselves, in ways they did not expect themselves.  It is heart-warming to be with the students as they display the leadership skills they have been developing throughout the year.  We see many examples during the camp, of our students showing encouragement, kindness and support for their class mates.  Most of all, the staff attending are proud of the comments we receive from the camp facilitators and members of the public about the behaviour and high standard of manners and courtesy our student display.  They are fine examples of the Matthew Gibney Spirit!

Remembrance Day

Our students participated in a moving ceremony this morning to commemorate Remembrance Day.  Remembrance Day marks the anniversary of guns falling silent on the Western Front in the First World War: the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Our nation stands in silent reflection for one minute each year to commemorate and honour those Australians who have died or suffered in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. This year will mark the 103rd anniversary of the Armistice, which ended the First World War. One thing we can do for the people who fought for our country, is to continue the tradition of remembering them.

Remembering

On this day of Remembrance, we remember the courageous men and women

who gave their lives in wartime and as a result of war.

As we remember the lives that have been lost,

let us promise each other to work for the freedom of all who are oppressed in the world today.

We ask this prayer in the name of Jesus who taught us how to live.

Amen

Visit by Hon. Matthew Swinbourn MLA

Next week, the Hon. Matthew Swinbourn MLA, Member for the East Metropolitan Region, will be visiting myself and representatives from the School Advisory Council.  During the visit we will be showing Mr Swinbourn around the school and talking to him about our plans for improvements and developing the school for the future.  We are interested in hearing from Mr Swinbourn how the State Government is supporting Catholic Education to meet the needs of current and future students.  Please email or come and have a chat with me, should you like us to ask Mr Swinbourn any questions about education, on your behalf.  I look forward to sharing information about the visit with parents at the Annual Community Meeting on 24th November.

Nominations for Catholic School Advisory Committee and P&F Association

We have received some nominations for positions on the Advisory Council, P&F Executive and for Class Parent Representatives.  However, more nominations are required. All parents are strongly encouraged to put their hand up for a representative position at the school.  The Parent Class Rep roles work best when there are a number of parents working together.  All nominations for Parent Reps will be accepted for 2022.  Please find more information and nomination forms for the required roles for 2022 via the link:

Making Jesus Real – Week 5 Term 4

Our MJR value this fortnight is KINDNESS.

“What is the difference between kindness and being nice?”

Most of us probably try to be nice and pleasant when we interact with others. After all, it works to our own benefit if others like us. Kindness, true Christian kindness, is much more than simply smiling and asking polite questions.

Kindness, is one of the Fruits of the Holy Spirit, and it comes with our desire to live like Jesus. We are called to be kind to others because God is kind to us. He loves us when we are unlovable, and He does this over and over again.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL CHRISTMAS HAMPERS – 2 Weeks to go!

Thank you so much to all the families who have been so generous in their Christmas Giving.  We still have a few empty boxes and really hope that we can fill them to overflowing in these last 2 weeks.  Your donations will make such a difference for people who are struggling to put food on the table, and will make their Christmas a much brighter and happier one.

Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

What a wonderful day of activities we enjoyed on Friday to celebrate our 30th Anniversary!  I was delighted with the large number of visitors, including grandparents, parishioners and parents who came along.  The attendance at all the events on the day was wonderful to see.  I extend a huge thanks to Michelle Steward, and her volunteers, for organising the wonderful morning tea.  Thanks to Fr Joseph, Deacon Trevor and Fr Anthony for celebrating Mass and thanks to our wonderful staff for preparing the students to participate in the various activities during the day.

The Colour Run was a fun way to finish off the day of celebrations.  The students (and the staff) had a great time getting covered in paint. Who would have thought that squirts of paint would provide so much joy? Thank you to the P&F Association for organising the Colour Run, and for the committee of helpers who brought it all together on the day.  Matthew Gibney Day celebrations were an excellent example of the strong culture of support that exists at our school. The culture of inclusiveness, collaboration and working together for the good of our students, was most evident on Friday.  Our students are thriving because the parents, staff and supporters of our school work together to ensure our children are always at the centre of all we do.  Thank you to you all.  We are blessed to have such a positive community culture here at Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School.

Year Six Camp

The Year Six students head off to their much-anticipated school camp to Busselton on Tuesday 9th November.  Camp is such an exciting time for the students, especially as they look forward to the time spent with classmates, prior to graduating from primary school.  In my experience, camp brings out the best in the students.  They thrive in new found independence, confidence and time away from the comforts of home.  I am most grateful to our teachers, Christina Zurzolo and Oliver Battistessa, for giving up their time to care for the Year Six students around the clock during the time away.  I look forward to sharing the experience with the children next week.

Nominations for P&F and Catholic School Advisory Council

Nominations are currently being accepted for the Parents and Friends Executive and the School Advisory Council.  Please click the links to take you to further information about both the associations, the roles required and a nomination form.  Please come and see me should you have any questions or queries.  All parents are encouraged to nominate and be involved with these vital parent groups within the school.

2022 School Advisory Council & P&F Nomination Form & Roles of the School Advisory Council & P&F Association

Annual Community Meeting – Save the Date!

The Annual Community Meeting will be held in the Library on Wednesday 24th November commencing at 7.00pm.  The School Advisory Council Chair, and the President of the P&F, will both provide reports on activities and achievements during the year. The school financial budget will be presented to the school community during the meeting.  Voting for positions on the P&F Executive and the School Advisory Council will take place during the Annual Community Meeting.  Refreshments will be available.  All parents are invited to come along.

Staffing 2022

I know at this time of the year parents are keen to know who their class teachers will be for 2022.  Details about staffing for the new year are currently being organised.  Parents will be informed about staffing for 2022 in the newsletter in Week 7.

Pupil Free Day – Monday 8th  November

Parents are reminded that Monday 8th November is a pupil free day.  I hope you enjoy the long weekend, in the middle of the term, to rest and re-energise before the sprint towards the end of the year.

Gibney Dad’s Club Camp Weekend

Next weekend our Dads will be off on their annual Dads and Kids camp.  Best wishes to you all for a fun few days away with your children.  I hope you enjoy the quality time spent with your children in the company of other Matthew Gibney Dads.  Best wishes to the Mums for a quieter weekend.  I hope you get some time to spoil yourselves.

During this week we follow the news about the UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow.  It is a reminder for all of us to care for and protect God’s wonderful gift of creation, so the earth can be enjoyed and sustained for all those who come after us.

Your World

God, you created the world with your dream of what it could be.

You dreamed of people and plants, animals and air,

all living in right relationship to you and to each other.

Today we offer to you our dream for a world

which is not threatened by a changing climate

which hurts our atmosphere,

which wounds the poorest and most vulnerable,

which leaves this wonderful planet in poor shape

for future generations.

Help us to listen to your voice,

your Word, and your creation.

(Adapted from Dream for the World, Centre for Ministry Development and Catholic Coalition for Climate Change.)

I hope all our families enjoy the long weekend and I welcome students back to school on Tuesday 9th November.  I will be away on camp with the Year Six students next week so please direct any queries to Assistant Principals, Karen Keddie and Diane Scriven.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students

Parents, students and staff have been working hard preparing for our Matthew Gibney Day celebrations.  It looks as though we will be blessed with fine weather to enjoy all that the day has to offer.  We are anticipating a good crowd to help us celebrate our 30th anniversary year.  The day commences with Mass at 9.00, followed by the playground opening, open classrooms, morning tea and the Matthew Gibney Day Concert.  The day will conclude with the P&F Colour Run.  Please come along for as much of the day as you can manage.  We would dearly love for our guests to join us for Mass to commence the day.  The celebration of the Mass is our opportunity to thank God for the gifts he has bestowed upon us as we celebrate 30 years of our thriving school community.

I take this opportunity to thank our staff, parents and students for their assistance in preparing for the Matthew Gibney Day celebrations.  It has been a huge effort by all concerned.

Welcome to our Grandparents

A special welcome to our grandparents at the celebrations tomorrow.  We are blessed in our community to enjoy the participation and involvement of grandparents in all aspects of school life.  Grandparents are valued members of our families and communities because they have so many stories, wisdom and experiences from their own lives to share. Often children will listen to their grandparents even when they are not listening to their own parents.  Thank you to our Matthew Gibney grandparents for all you do. Your love of your grandchildren is appreciated by our community.

 Happy World Teacher’s Day

World Teacher’s Day is celebrated in Australia on 29th October.  Due to our Matthew Gibney Day celebrations we will be having a staff celebration on 28th October.  World Teacher’s Day is a day of recognition for all staff who work in schools.  All staff working at Matthew Gibney Catholic Primary School are here because of their dedication to the wellbeing of children.  All staff contribute to ensuring that our children have the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential.  The staff at our school are a team who always work together in the best interests of our children.  On your behalf, I thank them for their dedication and sense of service in doing this most important work of God, in developing and nurturing the young people of the future.

Waste Free Wednesday

Thanks to an initiative from Emmy, we are commencing Waste Free Wednesdays for the rest of this year.  Waste Free Wednesdays is an opportunity for families to think about reducing the waste in student lunch boxes.  There are plenty of options available now for waste free lunches.  Please try and avoid wrappers and plastic waste products on Wednesdays. We will avoid putting out the bins and do this little bit to encourage our students to think about what they can do to reduce their waste footprint on our environment.

On Monday 1st November we celebrate the Feast of all Saints. All Saints Day is a day to remember and venerate saints from around the world and throughout history– not only those known and canonised, but also all unknown as well. It is a day for us to recognise the saints in our own families and communities.  There are many people, who live saintly lives through their strong faith and through the way they witness Jesus in all aspects of their lives.  I am sure we can all recognise someone we know, or have known, who displays saintly qualities of Gospel values including; kindness, compassion and forgiveness.  We can all strive to be saints everyday as we make Jesus real to others.

Prayer for All Saints Day

They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come.

Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us.

Bless the memories of your saints, God.

May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.

I look forward to welcoming parents and visitors to our Grandparents and Matthew Gibney Day of celebrations tomorrow morning.

Best wishes for the week ahead.

Making Jesus Real – Term 4 Week 3

Our MJR value this fortnight is ENCOURAGEMENT.

Words of encouragement can revitalize us. Positive words have the power to give us the strength we need to press on.  An encouraging word can inspire us to change our attitude.  Knowing that there’s someone who believes that we can make it.  The definition of the word “encourage” is, “to inspire with courage, spirit, or hope.” Encouragement is meant to raise someone’s spirit.  As a MJR community, we look out for one another, we look to see where we can lift others up and bring hope.

Pre-Primary Good News

What a busy start to the term we have had in PrePrimary. We started with writing our holiday recounts. The children did a fabulous job remembering the important elements of our recounts. What a wonderful day we had on Sunday at our parish and school anniversary celebration lunch! It was great to see so many of our families come along and join in with our parish community. The parishioners of St Francisof Assisi provided us with a delicious international lunch which was enjoyed by all those who came along.  I am so grateful to our parishioners for their dedication to our school.  Special thanks to Clare Arnold, and the organising committee, for their preparation and hard work towards ensuring such a successful event.

P&F Association and Matthew Gibney Catholic School Advisory Council Nominations 2022

Parents are encouraged to begin to think about nominating for a position of the School Advisory Council and the P&F Executive in 2022.  Voting information will be sent home to all families next week.  Please come and have a chat, should you require further information about a position on either of these essential school committees.

I recently came across this reflection that reminded me to slow down and focus on those things that bring joy and love in life.  God has given us so many blessings living here in WA and I hope these words can speak to you in some small way.

Barely the day started and it’s already six in the evening.

Barely arrived on Monday and it’s already Friday.

.. and the month is already over. .. and the year is almost over.

.. and already 40, 50 or 60 years of our lives have passed.

So.. Let’s try, despite everything, to enjoy the remaining time.

Let’s keep looking for activities that we like.

Let’s smile at the little things in life that put balm in our hearts.

Let’s try to eliminate the afters..

I’m doing it after. I’ll say after. I’ll think about it after.

We leave everything for later like ′′ after ′′ is ours.

Because what we don’t understand is that:

Afterwards, the coffee gets cold.

Afterwards, priorities change.

Afterwards, the kids grow up.

So.. Let’s leave nothing for later.

Because still waiting to see later, we can lose the best moments, the best

experiences, best friends, the best family.

The day is today. The moment is now.

It Looks Like An Eternity,

But It’s A Short Trip,

Enjoy Life And Always

Be Kind.

I look forward to welcoming parents to the Merit Award Assembly on Friday.

Best wishes for the week ahead.
